Mind the Gap Report: Career Progression for Black Marketing Professionals

March 22, 2022

The All In Census has reported that only 1% of C-suite level positions in the UK marketing industry are occupied by Black professionals, and over a third of Black talent are likely to leave the industry over lack of inclusion. Both problems are distinctly connected, with retention of Black talent in advertising and marketing presenting one of the greatest challenges for the UK creative industry. In the wake of the Black Lives Matter movement in 2020 which saw increased efforts on the part of agencies and brands to diversify their pipeline of talent into the workplace, these same organisations are now experiencing the real-time effects of non-inclusive workplace cultures and practices on the turnover rates of Black employees.

In this report, Pocc documents the ethnographic findings of interviews and focus groups conducted with 25 Black marketing professionals to further understand the barriers facing Black talent in progressing or being promoted into senior positions in the industry. By understanding the experiences of those who remain in industry, who has left, and who is considering re-entering, this report looks to cultivate a map connecting points of tension to identify how employers can do better in supporting Black marketers into the senior roles of the future.
